Additional Information

the First specially designed flame-thrower tank was the Pz.Kpfw.II (FI) (or Flammpanzer), also known as Flamingo (in harmony with Flamme - "flame"). Development began in 1939. Produced flamethrower tanks on the basis of the Pz.ll Ausf. D and E with large diameter support rollers. Standard tower replaced the tower with a machine gun in a ball mount with a caliber of 7.92 mm and the observation devices on the perimeter. Only on the shelves front mounted two rotatable turrets (Spitzkopfe) with water cannons flamethrowers. Smoke grenade launchers were installed for self-defense.

Pz.II (FI) were included in the 19th Panzer division of the Wehrmacht. Also on 42 the tank Pz.ll(FI) were part of the 100th and 101st battalions (in the 2nd and 3rd tank group, respectively). Only on 22 June 1941 the Wehrmacht had three battalions of flamethrower tanks, and all on the Eastern front - one in the group of armies "South" and two in the army group "Center". They were used as a means of close combat for direct infantry support. Stock ognesmesi allowed to make up to 80 shots, the range of the flamethrower was 25 meters. It was assumed that the flamethrowers can significantly improve the effectiveness of the advancing troops, but in practice the situation was different. 30-mm frontal armor made its way even with anti-tank guns at a distance much greater than the range of effective firepower. Lucky shot gunners or Riflemen-anti-tank Riflemen led to the fire ognesmesi and guaranteed destruction of the tank and crew.

General A. I. Rodimtsev, telling about the battle for Stalingrad, mentions that in battles for urban station in September 1942 Germans used several flamethrower tanks.
Despite the heavy losses, the flame-thrower tanks remained in the army until almost the end of 1942.
