Additional Information
in the Autumn of 1941, advancing on the Eastern front and in North Africa, the German army increasingly encountered a well-prepared echeloned defense. It took new types of equipment with high firepower and sufficient mobility. Available in the troops "assault tanks" Sturmpanzer I Bison, armed with a 150-mm gun, was too small, and they had a lot of design flaws. The company Alkett in 1940 began work on the creation of a new promising self-propelled gun on the chassis of PzKpfw II tanks. The first copy was collected in the summer of 1940. However, field tests revealed a number of shortcomings. The redesign of the chassis, the introduction of an additional pair of support rollers, the elongation and expansion of the hull, the change in the design of the armored car – all this led to the fact that the pre-production batch of 12 cars was ready only in the spring of 1942. In as a "test site" for military tests chose North Africa, far self-propelled guns traveled in the early spring 1942 in the composition of the 707 th and 708 th his mouth dire infantry tubes. The disadvantages such as weak armor and enough powerful engine, more than outweighed the advantages of a large caliber gun. But most of these "assault tanks" were not allowed. In 1943 was already prepared better Sturmpanzer 38(t) Grille.
In may 1943, when the African corps capitulated, as a trophy the British got one Navigator II on the move and six, partially disassembled for parts. After the end of world war II, they were handed over to Egypt and were destroyed in 1948 during the Arab-Israeli war.
