The development of the SU-100 began in 1944 as a further development of the SU-85, built on the t-34-85 chassis. SU-100 quickly proved to be one of the best anti-tank artillery self-propelled units of the Second world war. The gun was able to penetrate 125 mm vertical armor from a distance of 200 meters, and inclined, 85 mm armor on the sides of German tanks. After intensive tests of different models of 100 mm guns, Soviet engineers approved the mass production of D10-S. SU-100 had a number of other improvements compared to the SU-85, the most important of which is increased to 75mm frontal armor, new surveillance devices and ventilation system.Mass production began in September 1944.
