P-61 Black Widow, the first aircraft specifically designed for radar applications. The first flight took place in 1942, was used until 1954. Despite the small number of vehicles produced (215 including prototypes), it was actively used both in the Pacific theater of operations, where it was used to support ground forces, and in the European theater of war, where it was mainly an interceptor, replacing the early British night fighters. The crew consisted of three people: the pilot, the shooter, the radar operator. Opinions about the effectiveness of the "black widow" as a night fighter strongly disagree, it is widely believed that due to the large mass of the engine power did not provide enough speed to effectively combat fighters and medium bombers. At the same time, the crews of the aircraft shot down a significant number of enemy aircraft with relatively low own losses (often due to friendly fire and problems when landing in the dark). After the war, the aircraft were used for a number of studies, projects of ejection seats were worked out, weather studies and other experiments were carried out.
