In 1962, separate designation systems for Navy and air force aircraft were replaced by a slightly modified version of the air force system, and each existing naval aircraft received a new designation. Although the standard C-117 had substantially different aircraft, the R4D-8 (Super DC-3s) Navy was renamed the C-117D. These aircraft had a longer fuselage and a larger tail than the C-47, and a tilted rear edge on the wings. C-117D remained in the service of the marine corps until July 1976, but some of them were saved from other duties, at least until 1979, when some of them were used by the squadron for the operation and maintenance of the station at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina.
