Additional Information
Mk.11 was the last modification of the Chiften used by the British army. During the Cold war, it was planned to improve all tanks to the Mk standard.11, but because of the collapse of the Soviet Union, only 324 tanks were improved. In the 80-ies it became clear that the chiften becomes obsolete, Soviet weapons of the last generation, specially designed to defeat the armor of Chiften, led to the creation of an additional reservation system Stillbrew. The system greatly changed the appearance of the tank tower, significantly improved its protection from the new Soviet weapons, while not worsening the performance of the tank. 23 workshops in West Germany began to install Stillbrew in 1986, when the tanks came for major repairs.
a new system of protection against biological and radioactive threats was Installed, significant changes were also made to the gunner's equipment, TSL (laser guidance), IFCS (improved fire control system) and other improvements were installed on the tank, some of which are still used on the modern British Challenger 2 tank. Among the most important improvements of the Mk.11 – thermal imager, which proved its effectiveness during the Gulf war (installed on Challenger 1). The thermal imager significantly improved the performance of the tank in the night battle, increasing the effective range of the improved main gun. Was fixed and the most important drawback of the early Chiftenov – unreliable engine. The tank remained in service until 1995.
