the Merkava Tank was developed at a rapid pace. In December 1974 began testing two prototypes, and preparation for serial production was already in 1976. decision about large-scale production was taken not before results tests of experienced samples - so military leadership was confident in creating "decent" the tank. In the spring of 1977, 40 units of the first pre-production batch were announced. Expenses for the creation of the tank amounted to 65 million dollars. Officially tank "Merkava" MK.1 was adopted on 29 October 1979. The first of them were sent to the seventh armored brigade of the Israel defense Forces. In mid 1982, the new machine has received 21 armoured brigade and educational team of the school of tank commanders and officers-tank crews and brigade school of tankers.
