the History of the Sherman tank begins in 1939. Urgently developed on the basis of M2, and put into production medium tank M3 "Lee" was not satisfied with the military already in the development phase. Urgently needed a new tank with a brand new circuit layout and placement of weapons, which would be relatively cheap in production. Eventually, on 2 September 1941 on the range Rock island Arsenal, representatives of the military Department of the USA was presented the tank with a designation of T6, which quickly passed the standardization and was adopted under the designation M4. In February we started the serial production of tanks M4 "Sherman" - your name, the car was named after the American General during the Civil war William Sherman. M4 "Sherman" had a classic layout: the engine room was located in the aft of the hull, transmission — in the front, and between them was the combat compartment. The only drawback of the layout is the high height of the tank body. The reason for this was the vertical position of the aircraft star-shaped engine and the front location of the main element of the transmission, which determined the use of a high gearbox for gimbals to the box from the engine. The crew of the American medium tank M4 "Sherman" consisted of 5 people. The tank commander was placed in a triple tower and monitored the terrain through optical devices, directing the actions of the other crew members. To the right and left of it were placed the loader and gunner. All three are used for loading the tank and unloading it in two round hatch in the roof of the tower. The driver-mechanic and the gunner-radio operator were placed in the front part of the hull. Tanks M4A3 equipped with a gasoline engine V8 Ford GAA, which developed a capacity of 500 horsepower.
