Additional Information
the German "eighty-eight" is probably one of the most famous, even famous artillery systems of the Second world war. It was not one model, but a series of air defense guns bearing the designation 8.8 cm Flak 18, 36 or 37. Flak is short for German Fliegerabwehrkanone which means air defense weapon, the original purpose of "88".
Flak 36 had a two-piece barrel for easier replacement of worn parts. The gun had a new, heavier gun carriage, providing a faster deployment of the gun. This design feature is very useful in operations related to the rapid movement of troops, the main tactics of Blitzkrieg.
88 was used in two roles as a mobile heavy air defense battery and in a more static role in the defense of Germany. In the second role, the guns were assembled into larger batteries, obeyed one gunner and moved very rarely.
