Additional Information
in the Spring of 1944, Germany began production of new reconnaissance tanks on the basis of the well-proven chassis of the light tank 38(t). Aufklarungspanzer (Sd.Kfz 140/1) were equipped with a rotating turret with a 20-mm KWK 38 automatic gun and a mg-42 machine gun paired with it. From above the tower was closed with wire mesh, protecting from falling hand grenades inside the fighting compartment. The design of the body of the base tank was also changed, and the improved engine allowed to develop a higher speed. In total, about 70 SD reconnaissance tanks were produced.Kfz 140/1. They entered service with reconnaissance battalions of tank divisions and were used on the Western and Eastern fronts until the end of world war II.
