the Combat experience of tanks during the September 1939 campaign showed that a well-armored infantry support tank was very much needed at the front. The combat characteristics of the PzKpfw II could only be improved by increasing the reservation. In December 1939 began development of the Panzer II n.A. (neue Art - new model) VK 1601. The chassis design used the same concept as the PzKpfw I Ausf. F. armor Thickness ranged from 50 mm to 80 mm instead of 14.5 – 20 mm on previous versions, resulting in a weight increase of up to 18 tons. Since this tank installed the same engine as the PzKpfw I Ausf. F (Maybach HL 45 P), the maximum speed decreased to 31 km/h. the Armament of the new tank was no different from previous modifications. The main weapon was a 20-mm gun KwK 38 L/55. The prototype was ready on 19 June 1940. Serial tanks PzKpfw II Ausf. J produced by MAN and Daimler-Benz.
