"Vespe" (full official name - leichte Feldhaubitze 18/2 auf Fgst Pz Kpfw II (Sf) "Wespe" (Sd Kfz 124)) was produced on the chassis of the PzKpfw II Ausf. F and thanks to the compactness, good mobility and excellent ballistics of the gun, was recognized as one of the most successful ACS of its time.
Designed by the firm "Alkett", according to its creators, it was to give the infantry fire and assault support.The Wespe was designed in the first place, to complete the artillery batteries of the Panzer divisions - Panzerartillerie, each of which had 6 self-propelled Wespe and 2 the tractor for transportation of ammunition Munitionsschlepper Wespe. The main armament machines was widespread in German artillery 105-mm howitzer leFH18. In the chassis were introduced blocking suspension brakes, which increased the stability of the platform for shooting. In battle, this light mobile machine was always ready to support motorized infantry and tanks.
