By 1976, existing in Japan, the main tanks Type 61 and Type 74 are very outdated, and it was decided to create a combat vehicle that would have the strength was equal to the Soviet T-72. Mitsubishi began work on the new tank, attracting specialists from Germany who worked on the Leopard. As a result, by 1989, the tank was designed received a code "90" and sent for testing. During the development of the tank, Mitsubishi created a fire control system, one of the best in the world. It includes panoramic devices stabilized in two planes, observation and guidance devices, laser rangefinder, electronic ballistic computer and many other devices and sensors that significantly simplify the process of aiming at the target.
After all the tests in 1990 he released the docking party, and in 1992 began mass production of the main tank Type 90.
Today, the Type 90 tank is no longer produced – a cheaper and more modern Type 10 is used in production. As of 2016, 341 Type-90 is in service.
For all time the tank was not delivered abroad and never participated in military operations.
