T-55 (Object 155) was produced instead of T-54M (Object 140). Despite the external similarity of the T-55 is a deep processing of the tank, with many internal and external differences. Externally, the T-55 used a new tower, similar to the one used on the T-54A, but without the characteristic ventilation compartment called "mushroom", d-shaped panels were installed on the roof. Internal changes included a new V-55 engine, an increase in ammunition to 43 and other features. The crew compartment was equipped with initial methods of protection against chemical and radioactive threats. T-55 was adopted in 1957, mass production began on January 1, 1958.
