BMP-2 delivered in the early 1980s as an improved version of the BMP-1 had significantly improved weapons. The new two-seater tower is equipped with a 30-mm automatic gun capable of firing at enemy air vehicles. The turret is equipped with a launcher for guided missiles. Increased tower led to a decrease in the transported personnel per person.
