This legendary Soviet tank was designed on the basis of the serial T-34 of the 1942 model and adopted by the resolution of the State defense Committee No. 5021 of January 23, 1944. The number 85 indicated a new increased caliber gun. Instead of 76-mm guns were installed new 85-mm gun D-5T and later ZIS-S-53. In this regard, all t-34 tanks with 76-mm gun were designated T-34-76. The new weapon allowed to hit targets at a distance of 1.5-2 kilometers. Armor with a thickness of up to 100 mm, the 85-mm gun projectile punched from a distance of 1000 m. the sub-Caliber projectile from a distance of 500 m coped with armor with a thickness of up to 140 mm. the New enlarged tower allowed to bring the crew up to 5 people and free the crew commander from the duties of the gunner. Now he could concentrate on the main duties: to observe the terrain, detect targets, to destroy them from guns and machine guns.
