To break through the defensive lines of German troops in 1944, the United States developed an assault combat vehicle T31, which had the unofficial name "Demolition Tank" — "Tank destroyer". This name is consistent with the unusually powerful weapons mounted on the chassis of the M4A3 "Sherman".
Tanks M4A3 "Sherman" the basic version had the machine gun ball mount in front plate of the housing. Instead weapons in the new project been used a flamethrower. In the driver's assistant's workplace, the existing installation now housed a jet flamethrower hose. In the right front part of the body also installed a tank for ognesmesi capacity of 50 gallons (about 190 liters.) and cylinders for compressed air required for the release of flammable liquid. To use the flame thrower was the driver's assistant.
In the center of the frontal sheet, a pipe was rigidly attached, which was a simulator of a 105-mm howitzer. The dense layout of the combat compartment did not allow the tank to be equipped with a real weapon, but the authors of the project considered that the armored vehicle needed means of simulating such weapons. The last element of a complex conventional weapons were anti-aircraft heavy machine gun M2HB mounted near the commander's cupola.
