In June 1942, an attempt was made to improve the flight and tactical characteristics of the Yak-7B front-line fighter by simplifying the design and increasing the fuel reserve. The plane, which received the name Yak-7ДИ (long-range fighter), was ready in June 1942, the Test confirmed the increase in the flight performance of the new machine, and Yak-7ДИ was launched in a series under the symbol Yak-9, becoming the most popular fighter of the Soviet air force during world war II. For the first time in the fighting Yak-9 took part during the Soviet counteroffensive at Stalingrad in December 1942.
