Additional Information

the Chieftain has Been NATO's most powerful tank since its adoption in 1966. The tank was constantly upgraded throughout the entire period of operation. Among the most important improvements are new types of shells, a modern fire control system, a new radio station (Clansman) and many attempts to fix the unreliable L60 engine.

Armor protection of the tank has not been modernized for a long time, as it was considered sufficient protection from Soviet guns. Nevertheless, by the early 80's, it became known that the Soviet Union has a specially designed tools and ammunition to defeat the front-line armor of Chiften, followed by the receipt of this information, followed by a request to improve the survivability of the machine. Evidence obtained during the Iran-Iraq war confirmed that the 125 mm gun 2A46 of the T-72 tank could penetrate the frontal armor of Chiften from a distance of 1 km.

the Program of modernization of armor was designed for the survival of machines after a shot from the new Soviet guns at normal ranges of combat. The Stillbrew armor set was installed at the front of the turret, and on both sides of the driver to protect the turret ring. The new armor significantly changed the appearance of the tank making it look more aggressive and modern than it really was. Almost the entire Park British Chiftenov received an upgrade booking, all these tanks were classified as Chieftain Mk. 10.

"Live" tests with T-72 and T-80, conducted after the Cold war, confirmed the effectiveness of the design, the tank made its way only from a distance of direct fire. Rumors of what made the armor go to this day, some argue that this is the first armor Cobham, although in reality it's just a steel box with layers of rubber, thick armor plate and a layer of concrete.

Mk.10 is widely used by the army of great Britain, later upgraded to Chieftain Mk.11 or was replaced by Challenger 1 and sent to the reserve. A small amount of Mk.10 used in BAOR with the Berlin Brigade, these Mk.10 probably became the most frequently photographed tanks due to the effective urban camouflage used on these combat vehicles. Chieftain Mk.10 remained in Berlin until the end of the Cold War, as it was assumed that in the event of a conflict, the Berlin Brigade would be quickly swept away by Soviet tanks, and new technologies such as the Chobham armor would be captured by the Soviet Union.
