In the early 1930s, the British army decided to produce tanks for various tasks, the production of The a-12 Matilda began in 1936. By the time of its appearance, Matilda had the heaviest armor – 60mm frontal armor and thick side screens to protect the chassis of the "Japanese type". Two engines were able to accelerate Matilda to 24 km/h, which was considered sufficient, since the machine was created to support the infantry. In North Africa, thanks to impenetrable armor, Matilda defeated the Italian forces. Booking the tank forced the Germans to use 88mm air defense guns – the only weapon able to break through the massive armor. The tank was used throughout the war, as well as supplied by the UK to the Soviet Union and Australia.
