Harrier is the world's first vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) combat aircraft. Work on the VTOL British firm Hawker began in the late 50-ies. The prototype P. 1127 made its first flight in October 1960. The prototype of the production aircraft was handed over for testing in 1966. But armed with the British air force since 1969.
In the United States was established licensed production of the aircraft under the designation AV-8A firm McDonnell Douglas. Aircraft of the first series were in service with the Spanish Navy.
