the T-62 was originally designed to support the T-55, being essentially a T-55 with a more powerful 115mm 2a20 cannon. Both designs used common rollers, tracks, engine, transmission and other parts. The main difference between the T-62 was an elongated body and a new design of the tower. The new weapon with a special type of projectile was able to penetrate about 300 mm of armor at a distance of 1000 meters, which was enough to destroy potential enemies - the American M-48 and late modifications of the British "Centurion". The creation of the T-62 was to increase the range of defeat of the objectives of the tank formations of the armed T-55, but years of development and improvement allowed to fully assume the functions of the T-55.
