the Main battle tank Type 96 (ZTZ96) is developed on the basis of the export tank Type 85-IIM. The original version for PLA was designated Type 88C or ZTZ88C. Due to financial difficulties, the serial production of the main type 88C battle tanks for the Chinese army was started only in 1997, and their designation was changed to Type 96. Production of tanks is carried out at the military plant № 617 in Baotou — the main Chinese tank enterprise. According to the Chinese military leadership, the Type 96 tanks, along with the latest Type 99 will form the basis of armored units of the people's liberation army of China in the first quarter of the XXI century.
